Description

Jane Dickson. "LA Lot Sunset". 16" x 24", archival paper. Signed edition of 50. $175. Often painting night scenes in casinos, peep shows and carnivals, as well as the open roads of our country at dusk, Jane Dickson can recall the days when Times Square turned dark at 11PM. Part of the politically charged 1980s art scene, Jane worked alongside artists David Wojnarowicz, Keith Haring, and Jenny Holzer, playfully experimenting with painting on unusual surfaces such as Astroturf, sandpaper, vinyl, or carpet. In this image, Dickson halts the setting sun over a partially empty parking lot, depicting a common feature of American life and its inhabitants much like Edward Hopper. She describes being transfixed by the jumbled scene of palm trees and houses amongst oil derricks, freeways, and malls while in Long Beach. Originally a painting on textured felt, the rich orange-pink desert hues of the sky contrast with the dark world beneath it.
